MANILA, Philippines—Did you know that on Ash Wednesday Sen. Maria Ana Consuelo “Jamby” Madrigal prayed “especially hard” for Sen. Manuel “Manny” Villar, one of her rivals in the May presidential derby?
Asked why, the independent presidential candidate replied: “The Lenten season is about personal sacrifice. It is also about our willingness to put our country above our own personal gain, humility above arrogance, principles above compromise, truth above slander, courage above cowardice, and real justice above all. That is why, I prayed especially hard for Mr. Villar.”
Madrigal made the comments to the Inquirer after a visit to the Redemptorist Church in Baclaran, Parañaque City.
She expressed hope the Nacionalista Party standard-bearer would “have the humility to admit his mistakes and learn from them rather than to be a person in denial and arrogant enough to say he’s right when he’s wrong.”
Madrigal was part of the Senate Committee of the Whole which recommended the censure of Villar for alleged unethical conduct in connection with the C-5 road extension project controversy that benefited his real estate business at the expense of the government.
Madrigal reiterated she had nothing against Villar as a person.
“What I am against is the crimes I perceive him to have committed as evidenced by the 900 pieces of evidence in the Senate committee report,” she said, adding she was mad at him “because he is corrupt.”
Earlier, she referred to the NP bet as an “evil candidate.”
But “I’m happy that our efforts have paid off. Because now after six months, people are beginning to understand that their money was used by a so-called billionaire to further enrich himself to buy the presidency, to buy Malacanang.”
Madrigal said she also prayed that “darkness would be overcome by the light.”
“If that is a prayer for my rivals, whoever of us craves the light more should be the winner in the coming elections. Because we can no longer be obscured by the darkness that has possessed us.”
She also “asked Our Lady of Perpetual Help for a miracle to lift our country out of darkness by blessing us with her Divine Light and Grace… so that the truth may prevail and justice is done, especially for the coming elections.”
