MANILA, Philippines – Former President Joseph Estrada said yesterday that the next Chief Executive must prioritize resolving the energy crisis.
Estrada expressed frustration over alleged corruption and incompetence at the Department of Energy, which is causing the present power crisis in the country.
“As far back as two years ago, at the height of the rice crisis, analysts were already saying that the country will be facing an energy crisis in 2010. Why did the government sleep on this?” he said.
“The problem with this present government is that they do not appoint men of competence. A president must appoint men of unquestionable integrity and competence. The best example is in the field of energy, they appointed Angelo Reyes (chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines during his administration). What does he know about energy?” Estrada said.
“In the field of energy we need long-term solutions. You cannot rush it. I will call a meeting of the best minds in the field of energy to come together at the beginning of my term so that by the end of my term the Philippines can be the leading country in Asia especially in the field of alternative energy,” he said.
