MANILA, Philippines – Senator Edgardo Angara yesterday urged political candidates to refrain from meeting officials of other countries to avoid suspicion that they are planning to manipulate the upcoming polls.
Angara issued the statement after Liberal Party standard-bearer Sen. Benigno Aquino III admitted meeting some US government officials.
“Two or three weeks before the elections, they should refrain from meeting these people to prevent undue suspicion that they are influencing the outcome of the elections,” Angara told reporters in a Manila Hotel forum yesterday.
“I’m sure they are not but you’ll never know. The American meetings were done too close to the May 10 polls,” Angara said.
Aquino had said that his meeting with the US officials did not involve any serious discussions.
Aquino, son of democracy icon Corazon Aquino and former senator Benigno Aquino Jr., has topped all presidential surveys conducted by various polling firms.
