The Philippine Star today wrote that the House of Representatives is halting its impeachment proceedings against Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez until the Supreme Court’s final ruling on the matter.
Belmonte stressed that “no decision of the court can ever erase” the House’s constitutional prerogative to initiate the impeachment process.
“We have not crossed hard barriers yet. At this stage of the game, the Supreme Court is also trying to find out its role, to find out what is the situation, and so forth… in the meantime, yes, let’s find out, let’s learn from what they are thinking about. I don’t like to look at it as a confrontation between the Ombudsman and ourselves and between the Supreme Court and ourselves,” Belmonte told reporters.
Malacañang, meanwhile, said President Aquino is keeping his hands off the impeachment complaint against Gutierrez, which the SC ordered suspended.
“We respect the decision of the Supreme Court and we are confident that they will decide on the case based on the evidence and arguments presented,” presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said in a statement.
Looks like Merceditas Gutierrez lives on to fight another day. It would be interesting to see whether or not the Supreme Court lets this go through.
