Advisory Group for ASEM Rectors

25 October 2010 – The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), Korea University, and the ASEAN University Network recently established the 2nd ASEM Rectors’ Conference Advisory Group.  This group comprises the heads of distinguished universities from ASEM countries.  This advisory group has given input to the 2nd ASEM Rectors’ Conference, which will take place from 26-27 October 2010 in Seoul, Korea.

The ASEM Rectors’ Conference is a biennial meeting between the heads of higher education institutions.  The 2nd ASEM Rectors’ Conference, “Asia-Europe University Cooperation: Contributing to the Global Knowledge Society”, will be attended by over 80 higher education experts.

This advisory group has helped to shape the content structure for this conference.  Based on the conference theme of global knowledge society, it will study pressing trends and issues in higher education today.  The group will also be responsible for drafting the final recommendations to be adopted by the participants of the 2nd ASEM Rectors’ Conference. These recommendations will be submitted to various Education Ministers present for the upcoming 3rd Asia-Europe Meeting of Ministers for Education (ASEMM3) in Copenhagen in May 2011.

The group includes representatives from Europe and from Asia.  They are Prof. Frans Zwarts, Rector Magnificus of the University of Groningen (the Netherlands); Prof. Maurits van Rooijen, Rector Magnificus of the Nyenrode Business University (the Netherlands); Prof Vincent Berger, President of University Paris 7 (France); Prof Koen Lamberts, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, Science and Medicine at the University of Warwick (United Kingdom),  Dr. Edilberto de Jesus, former Education Minister and President of the Asian Institute of Management (the Philippines); Prof Xiao Xian, Vice-president for International Affairs at the Yunnan University (China); and Prof Sharifah Hansah Syed Hasan Shahabudin, Vice-Chancellor of the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (Malaysia).
