Filipinos and Philippine government staff and facilities in Egypt, secured (Updated)

On Twitter, Secretary Ricky Carandang reported that the Philippine Embassy consulate in Cairo has been advising Filipinos in Egypt to avoid places where unrest is happening as well as crowded places.  There are 6,569 Filipinos in Egypt and contingencies are in place, should it become necessary to employ them such as the availability of 4 relocation centers in Egypt3 in Cairo, 1 in Alexandria.

According to Secretary Carandang, the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Palace are exerting efforts to keep in touch with our consulate.  He also reported that the Embassy, and its staff have been secured, though Internet connection is down.

The Charge d’affaires is in touch with the Filipino community.  No Filipino casualties have been reported so far.

The President is aware of the situation in Egypt, and according to Secretary Carandang he had just finished briefing him on the contingencies being employed and is monitoring the situation.

Press Undersecretary Abi Valte noted in a tweet that President Aquino has instructed PMS, DND, DFA, and the DOLE to meet today, and to make further recommendations on the Egyptian situation.
