Mt. Makiling guard killed

He spent 25 years patrolling and protecting the enchanted Mt. Makiling but in the end, this forest guard was unable to protect himself from an assassin’s bullet.

Elpidio “Jojo” Malinao, 49, was shot dead by a man on a motorcycle on Monday afternoon in the town of Bay in Laguna province shortly after a court hearing on a case he had lodged against illegal settlers on the fabled mountain.

News of his death shocked and angered his colleagues at the Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems (MCME), a unit of the College of Forestry and Natural Resources of the University of the Philippines in Los Baños (UPLB), which has jurisdiction over Mt. Makiling.

One year later   …   Any progress?  Has Robredo or de Lima or maybe CHR’s Rosales… have they found anything new?

Something is nonsensical about what has happened. Why again has the guard been filing cases against illegal settlers? That is not his job, in fact, he should have been stopped by his employers (University Philippines) from filing those cases.

Bottom-line — Universify of the Philippines has not provided the proper instructions/guidelines to the Makiling guards. UnivPhilippines, not the guard, should be the one to file the cases. This is a failure by Unv Philippines (in my opinion).

I think the Culture of Impunity is largely the same. How much a life is worth in the Philippines isn’t that huge. I think it would be a reasonable assumption that just because we switched presidents, doesn’t mean institutionalized impunity would go away over night. The administration, I’m told is better than the last— in terms for example of the maguindanao massacre. It is taking the right steps forward. Some one would say, it needs to take bigger steps, but that’s another thing all together.

Hmmmmm…. law and order — incidents of deadly violence in Pilipinas. Same now as during GMA administration, true??? False? Better now??? Worse now???

Is this even a “daang matuwid” issue? Ang layo ng Mt. Makiling at saka hindi naman tax-evasion o kasangkot ang BFF ni GMA o ang BFF ng isa sa Aquino administration..
