Robredo’s jail visit surprises Ampatuans

Six beds are crammed into the Ampatuan family’s cell, with nothing but colored curtains to serve as its partition. A single utility electric fan is propped on the floor to circulate air inside the stuffy cell.

On top of the beds lie some personal effects — a half-full 1.5 liter Coke bottle, blankets stored inside a plastic box, a Master facial cleanser, and an Aveeno body lotion, among others.

Plastic chairs and tables are also casually strewn beside the beds, while a single water dispenser is placed in the middle of the cell. The only thing adorning the wall is a huge calendar.

These were just some of the things witnessed personally by Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jesse M. Robredo and two newspaper reporters early Monday morning during a surprise inspection of the Bicutan Jail in Taguig City where the Ampatuan clan allegedly enjoyed certain special treatment.
