We are teachers, not carabaos!”
This was the sentiment of almost 100 public school teachers who stormed into the Department of Education (DepEd) main office in Pasig City last Monday to protest what they call “carabao-like treatment” of kindergarten teachers in relation to DepEd’s implementation of Universal Kindergarten program starting this school year.
The protest was led by Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT)-Manila chapter and Manila Kindergarten Teachers Association (MAKITA).
Kindergarten teachers – mostly from Districts 1 to 6 in Manila – marched to DepEd after finishing their classes to update Education officials on how the kindergarten classes went during the first day of school.
According to MAKITA President Araceli De Ocampo, teaching is a noble profession but “teachers are not beasts of burden like the carabaos.” “We should not be treated as such that we are being forced to compensate for the shortages and inadequacies of the school system,” added De Ocampo who has been teaching for the past 35 years.
