The United States Navy deployed the USS Chung-Hoon to the South China Sea. The US Navy deployed her after tensions rose in the region over Chinese incursion in the Spratly Islands. Vietnam has indicated it will have live-fire drill after the Chinese incursion.
USS Chung-Hoon is on independent deployment. She is an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer. The Chung-Hoon is 9,200 tons, 155.30 meters long and powered by 4 gas turbine engines. She has 380 officers and enlisted personnel. The Arleigh Burke-class is considered one of the most powerful destroyers ever built. Chung-Hoon is part of the Pacific Fleet and is based in Pearl Harbor.
The USS Chung-Hoon is named after Rear Admiral Gordon Pai’ea Chung-Hoon, a Hawaii native, and the first Asian American flag officer of the United States Navy. He served in World War II.
