The Sandiganbayan First Division convicted Thursday former Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff, retired-Gen. Lisandro C. Abadia, of perjury charges and sentenced him to a prison term of one year.
Abadia’s perjury conviction stemmed from his declaration of extra income in the amount of P2.55 million in 1992 which the Sandiganbayan found false.
In a 25-page decision penned by Associate Justice Rodolfo Ponferrada, Abadia was sentenced to suffer the indeterminate penalty of one year imprisonment and pay the cost of litigation.
The ruling was concurred to by Justices Rafael Lagos and Efren N. Dela Cruz, division chairman.
“With the presence of all the elements of the offense charged, (as the prosecution was able to discharge its burden to prove the guilt of the accused beyond reasonable doubt), the Court is constrained to render a verdict of conviction,” the decision read.
