The BOBs, or the Deutsche Welle International Blog Awards, “honors websites in 11 languages that champion the open exchange of ideas and freedom of expression.”

According to the BOBs website, “When the annual awards launched in 2004, [blogs] were just beginning to establish themselves as a new type of media and the BOBs aimed to show that this new form of communication was worthy of being taken seriously.”

Further: “The BOBs represent one of the Deutsche Welle ongoing efforts to contribute to promoting freedom of expression and the upholding of human rights around the world.”

Seventeen categories are open, including Best Blog in eleven languages (Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, English, French, German, Indonesian, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish), and six multilingual categories: Best Blog, Best Use of Technology for Social Good, Best Social Activism Campaign, Reporters Without Borders Awards, Special Topic Award: Education and Culture, and Best Video Channel.
