6 things you need to know about the new iPad

“We are redefining the category that Apple created with the original iPad,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said as he and his team unveiled the successor to iPad 2— the new iPad.

What’s so resolutionary about the new iPad?

1. Retina Display

It’s display, according to Apple’s Phil Schiller is the “Best mobile display ever”. It packs 264 pixels per inch in a 2050×1536 resolution— or 3.1 million pixels in its 9.7-inch display. This is “a million more pixels than an HDTV.” Not only that, the retina display on iPad has 44 percent greater saturation than the previous model.

Here’s a comparison between iPad 2 and the new iPad with retina display:

2. Quad-Core graphics

With the new iPad, Apple is introducing a new chip called, A5X. The quad-core graphics processor on the A5X drives the amazing new retina display. This is 2X faster than the one on iPhone 4S, and 4X faster than NVidia Tegra 3.

To put it simply, this chip is a screamer, and it makes everything on the new iPad super detailed.

3. New Camera

The new iPad now comes with a 5-megapixel camera, which Apple now calls, “iSight”. It is uses the same 5 lens system used on iPhone 4S— but at lower resolution. iPhone 4S has an 8-megapixel camera. The new iSight camera has backside illumination, hybrid IR filter, and uses an Apple-designed Image signal processor with auto-exposure, autofocus white balance and face detection. Not only that, this new camera can shoot HD video recording unto 1080p, with temporal noise reduction and video stabilization.

4. 4G comes to iPad

Apple has upgrade the wireless technology on this iPad so it can now get on a 4G LTE network. It means really, really fast downloading. Not only that, this new iPad can transform into a personal hotspot just like iPhone, so you can share the Internet connection while on the go.

5. Same price.

One would expect that this redefining of the category also meant a redefinition of the price.

No.

The new iPad 16GB wifi comes with an entry level price of US$499— which was the same price as the 16GB iPad 2 wifi. While the base price for a 4G iPad 16GB is at US$629. No prices yet for the Philippines.

6. Availability

So you want the new iPad? well it becomes available on March 16, but is available now for pre-order.

Impressive. But I still prefer the Android offerings though. 😉

And by the way, new Apple products usually follow the price point of their predecessors at launch.
