“The INC’s official news service, Eagle News, said the INC and government had reached “a peaceful agreement.” On YouTube, Eagle News headlined its announcement with “official statement of the Iglesia ni Cristo ending the 5-day peaceful assembly in victory.”

(What’s important is we managed to show and let everyone hear: The Iglesia ni Cristo is one.)”

The recorded message in Filipino— “sa paguusap na ito, ay nagkapaliwanagan na po ang dalawang panig” — was broadcast starting at 8:15am on Monday. The time was reported and noted by the Philippine Daily Inquirer. The broadcast was repeated after that.

The words,  “peaceful agreement” based on the English caption of INC’s Eagle News account on YouTube saying “INC and government have come into peaceful agreement.” In fact, the video itself is labeled “Breaking: Official Statement of the Iglesia ni Cristo, ending the 5-day peaceful assembly in victory.”

This sentiment of “victory” was echoed by emcee in Shaw that morning.

What did INC General Evangelist Bienvenido Santiago say on August 31, 2015?

  • Translation:

To our brothers and sisters in the Iglesia ni Cristo, we wish to inform you that both the INC and the government have spoken. These discussions have allowed both sides to clarify and explain matters.

This is why tensions have abated. The peaceful assembly which we started on Thursday afternoon has likewise seen a peaceful ending this Monday morning. We thank our Almighty God. All praise and honor go to him. Long live the Iglesia ni Cristo.

  • Original Statement:

Neither “Victory”, not “Peaceful agreement” are apt to describe the event. In a separate article by Rappler that told the insider story of why Iglesias ni Cristo left EDSA:

De Lima, who had announced her plans of seeking a Senate post in 2016, is set to resign from the Cabinet when she files her certificate of candidacy in October anyway. It will be a matter of time.

“They say it’s an agreement so they save face. We’ll let them have their graceful exit,” said the Palace official.
