The lower house of the Philippine Congress impeached Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez early Tuesday. Dean Jorge Bocobo on twitter said, “210 votes to impeach is a resounding indictment of the Ombudsman I was hoping for two thirds majority but this really sends Senate a message.” There were 47 Congressmen who voted against, while 4 abstained.
The final vote would be 211 yes votes, as Representative JV Ejercito changed his vote from no to yes.
Palace Spokesman Edwin Lacierda in a statement said, “The House, in transmitting the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate, now has the task to vigorously and effectively make its case to the combined juries of the Senate sitting as the Court of Impeachment, and to the Filipino people who will be sitting in judgment on the entire process. This is the glory of democracy: where the law applies to all, where scrutiny exempts no one, and where accountability is for our institutions to exact.”
Merceditas Gutierrez becomes the 2nd official in the Philippines to be Impeached by the House of Representatives. The articles of impeachment will be transmitted to the Senate, where the upper chamber will organize themselves to try the Ombudsman.
