In Talon-Talon Elementary School in the town of Layag-Layag, children have to cross shallow water every day in order to get to school. During high tide, the kids have to swim across. Surely the children need a form of transportation or a decent bridge so they can continue their education without the risk of getting sick or being carried away by the water.

A group of bloggers has started an initiative to raise funds for the students of Talon-Talon. Jay Jaboneta and friends started Zamboanga Fund For Little Kids, fund-raising drive to pool money in order to build a boat which can transport the students. The boat will be named Bagong Pag-Asa, befitting the name of the dreams of Layag-Layag.

Winston Almendras of BatangYagit.com is also trying to raise funds for the Pens of Hope Foundation. The foundation collects pens, pencils and other school supplies which they distribute to underprivileged schoolchildren in Davao City. He is now collecting money to buy supplies for the kids in Talon-Talon. A one dollar donation is enough to buy a child a pad paper, notebook, and a pencil. His campaign will run until the end of April 2011 and supplies will be handed over to Talon-Talon Elementary School in May.
